A 6-year-old boy in China had his eyes gouged out by a stranger while playing outside his home. He was taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment. “He asks why the sky is always dark… and why the dawn still hasn’t come,” his uncle said.
These words have touched millions of hearts in China. His story was the No.1 news story on Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. One poster said:
“This poor child, he must be suffering more than if he was dead, and he has to live in darkness forever, We have to capture the criminal!”
Another person wrote:
“This is so cruel. I hope we can quickly capture the suspect and bring justice back! She is worse than a monster.”
The boy had his eyes gouged out in an attack that was first believed to have been committed by an organ trafficker to take his corneas. The child was found covered in blood three to four hours after he went missing while playing outside, according to a Shanxi television report. His father told Shanxi Television:
“He had blood all over his face. His eyelids were turned inside out. And inside, his eyeballs were not there.”
The boy was drugged by a woman, dragged to a park, and “lost consciousness” before the attacker removed his eyes, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said on its account on Sina Weibo.
First reports claimed that the boy’s eyes were found nearby, but with the corneas missing. Updated reports by the police said the corneas were still intact, and they did not believe this crime was done by an organ trafficker, although they have no other explanation for this horrific crime.
Pictures showed the heavily-bandaged child being treated in the hospital. Although the boy is out of danger, the doctor said that the boy will be permanently blind, as the optic nerve was too damaged for eye transplants. The doctor will fit the boy with artificial eyes.
Police have offered a 100,000 yuan (US$16,300) reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.
