There is a saying in China that “dutiful sons are made by beating.” But when parents who are too strict can’t control themselves, tragedies can happen.

An 11-year-old girl from Zhejiang was declared dead at the provincial children’s hospital on May 20. She had been severely beaten by her father, after he found out she copied her homework.

According to Chinese media, the girl’s father dragged her to the garage, tied her up by the neck, and hit her with a rope.

He later regretted his actions, and knelt in the emergency room while hospital staff tried to revive her. He was then taken into police custody.

The news has caused a lot of online discussion. Some netizens think he was too strict, while others expressed sympathy as the only way to get good academic results is by doing the work.
