Spilled Water: Being a Woman in Contemporary China

Spilled Water is a documentary about how China’s economic transformation has affected the social status and rights of Chinese women.

After living in the United States for decades, Director May May Tchao returned to the mainland to look at the lives of four different women: a farmer, a lawyer, a factory worker, and an ethnic singer.

The title is based on the understanding in feudal China that a married daughter is of no value to her birth family… She is simply spilled water.
