WATCH: Over Half a Million People Gather in Hong Kong Pro-Democracy March

While Hong Kong police claimed only 90,000 protesters showed up for this year’s July 1 rally, locals said that the real number was more than five times that at around 510,000.

This footage taken between about 4.30 and 6 p.m. shows the sheer number of people who took part, calling for an end to the Chinese Communist Party’s control over the territory, and for citizens to exercise the right to choose their own government.

Over 500 people were arrested during the peaceful sit-in held in the city’s business district, which continued into the early hours of July 2.
