A 46-year-old woman married her 24-year-old son, and her ex-husband married the son’s mother-in-law to qualify for more compensation in a development area in Jiangsu Province.

The son’s residence certificate or hukou was linked to an area in Nanjing that was being reconstructed, so by having two residence certificates at the same address, the family could get more money from local authorities, according to Sina News.

False marriages are fairly common in China because the hukou system is not linked to the police system.
