Science: sometimes it’s just to see if you can. Challenging the limits of man, George Kourounis has just returned from the “gates of hell.” This could also be described as a twisted idea of of an adventure holiday.
George is a Canadian radio host and explorer. He recently geared up in a suit able to withstand the potential thousands of degrees Celsius heat from magma, and climbed down into the Marum Volcano to get as close to the lava lake, as possible, on a remote Vanuatu island.
George says the experience is hard to describe. The churning magma? “I say it is the voice of Satan’s magic washing machine.” Abseiling down into the caldera was like: “Entering the gates of hell.” He wants to go back and do it again, of course.
