Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei will showcase his new exhibition on human rights and freedom of expression on the Rock from Sept. 27.
The island stopped being a prison last century, and is now part of a national park. However, it’s still home to the infamous penitentiary fortress, and attracts flocks of visitors each year.
Ai spent almost three months in prison in 2011, after trying to find out the true number of children’s deaths in poorly built schools during the Sichuan earthquake in 2009.
His passport was taken by Chinese authorities so he won’t be attending the @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz exhibition which will be on show until April 2015.
