Legendary Model Iman Recounts Her Journey From African Obscurity to New York Fashion Fame (Video)

Fashion legend Iman came from the African country of Somalia, being her family’s first girl child in four generations.

After her family fled an unstable government in Somalia to settle in nearby Kenya, she was discovered by photographer Peter Beard on the street. At the time she was attending Nairobi University and working 2 jobs. She took his offer for a photo shoot. She was happy to use the money gained to support her university education.

Soon Iman was off to New York City, where she discovered an environment very different from where she had come from. And before she even knew how to conceptualize what fame was, she was famous.

A great story of discovery from a true beauty and pioneer in fashion.
