Pro-Beijing Lawmaker Says Umbrellas Are Dangerous Like Kung Fu Movies

A Hong Kong legislator told colleagues on Oct. 16 that “an umbrella can be an aggressive weapon,” according to the South China Morning Post.

Leung Che-cheung was referring to classic martial arts movies like this clip from Once Upon a Time in China starring Jet Li.

He said he thought many lawmakers are “just completely ignorant about history,” adding: “But tear gas and pepper spray are useless weapons … because they cannot make protesters fall [down], they just come back time after time.”

Pro-democracy lawmakers made jokes about Leung’s comment with one saying that he’d been watching too many movies.
