Watch a Baby Beluga Whale Being Born in Captivity (Video)

After being pregnant for 15 months, this 8-year-old Beluga whale gave birth to her first-ever calf on Oct. 29.

The rare footage was captured at Changsha Underwater World in Hunan Province. It’s thought to be the first aquarium in China to breed a Beluga or white whale.

The labor took about five hours, during which time the mother, Zhuo Ya, kept swimming around. Once born, the baby could swim straight away, and went to the surface with its mother to breathe.

The calf will stay with Zhuo Ya for the next two years, and she won’t perform in shows during this time.
