Great question let me help answer that for you! APEC stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, and its actually really important. Stay with me here.

APEC meets to discuss all sorts of things that affect the region like free trade and economic cooperation. APEC is held in a different place each time.

This year APEC is going  to be held in Beijing. China is a pretty big player in the APEC conferences, and you should care about APEC because:

1. Six of America’s top 10 largest good exporters are part of APEC (helping you live in a wealthy country with stuff you can buy).

2. Asian markets and economic trade allow you to get goods for cheaper (especially all those Japanese Kendamas you love so much).

3. Helps promote food security (APEC helps countries affected by drought or famine feed their people when they have poor harvests).

4. Helps women in the economy. Women are now 40 percent of the global work force and growing. It’s a big deal man.

2014’s APEC is happening Nov 5 – 11, look for us to update you on what’s happening with it and why you should care.

Diverse Pacific Rim economies formed APEC in Canberra in November 1989 to promote trade and economic cooperation in the region, just ten months after Australia Prime Minister Bob Hawke publicly launched the idea in a speech in Seoul.
