The world can be a lonely and confusing place. We think we are supposed to chase profit and security—though often these pursuits make us less happy and less fulfilled.
A man spilled his heart out on Reddit recently about how he felt he had chased the wrong things in life, and ended up without any purpose, feeling like he’d died inside.
His story is well worth reading. It shows what time and life can do to you when you once had dreams and motivations, but never followed them. In part, the man, who calls himself “John Jerryson,” writes:
‘All my dreams, my passion, gone. In a steady 9-7 job. 6 days a week. For 26 years. I repeatedly chose the safe path for everything, which eventually changed who I was.’
This story is a good reminder to people of all ages the importance of thinking of others first, of really evaluating what is important in life.
Personally, I have found that often when others tell me what’s important, it’s what’s important to them, not me. Life certainly can’t be about only doing things for yourself, right?
John’s final message is: “Please, do something with your life while you’re young. DO NOT settle down at 20. DO NOT forget your friends, your family. Yourself. Do NOT waste your life. Your ambitions. Like I did mine. Do not be like me.”
