This wall of 100 poems from the Tang Dynasty in Shanxi Province has been getting plenty of online attention.

The Taiyuan “cultural wall” is written in traditional Chinese characters, and is meant to promote cultural values, but it’s full of mistakes… 33 to be exact.

Many bloggers felt ashamed, saying it should be called the “embarrassing cultural wall”.

Here are some of the other things netizens said:

  • “Who on earth wrote this? They don’t even know the traditional words. Chinese people should pay more attention to traditional Chinese characters.”
  • “Simplified Chinese has lost the original appearance of the words.”
  • “The Cultural wall…. is to test how cultured you are!”
  • “Don’t allow people to learn our ancestors’ traditional characters, and then blame us if we write things wrong… Whose fault is that?!”

The last comment is aimed at the Chinese Communist Party which promotes people using simplified Chinese characters to prevent the transfer of China’s ancient culture.

Local authorities must’ve felt embarrassed too because the wall got wiped late on Dec. 9 and has now been nicknamed the “brick box” by bloggers instead.
