This story about a fireman shouting and speeding might sound a bit crazy, but it’s actually very touching.
Zhi Li is captain of the fire brigade in Yulin City, and received a call on Dec. 8 about a baby that had been abandoned in the cess pit of a public toilet, according to state media Xinhua.
He and his team rushed to the spot, and found the newborn girl lying face down in the pit. A 19-year-old firefighter called Youyun Xiao jumped in to get her without any hesitation, and wrapped her up in a blanket straight away.
They planned to wait for an ambulance to arrive, but the captain realized the baby was getting cold, so they jumped into the fire truck and drove to hospital immediately.
On the way to the hospital, Zhi Li shouted at the top of his voice at other vehicles to get out of the way, while also quietly saying to the baby: “Stay with us, sweetie!” and “Don’t fall asleep!”
They managed to reach the hospital in less than four minutes, and the baby survived. The doctor said she was in a critical condition, and might have died if they arrived a few minutes later.
The firemen called the baby Xiaoxiao, which is from the first character of the Chinese word for “firefighting,” and brought her clothes, diapers, and milk powder.
This video went viral online, and bloggers nicknamed the captain “Shouting Brother.” Many were moved by his efforts to save the little girl’s life.
