Did the first Kung Fu masters train simply to defeat their enemies? This is an interesting story you’ve probably never heard about!

In fact, the earliest script of the character for martial arts is composed of two parts—a weapon and a toe—which suggests it meant going to battle with weapons.

But later on, one part of the character changed, and it became the one shown in the picture with its two components:

  • 止 (zhi) for stop
  • 戈 (ge) for weapon

This also changed the meaning of the character. It shows that people realized,

The real benefit of martial arts comes from establishing peace and harmony, and not from expanding war.

But sadly, the original spirit of martial arts seemed to be missing nowadays. What do you think?
