I remember waking up and turning on Saved by the Bell to zone out on the lazy Saturday mornings of childhood and the early teenage years. You always took watching the show as an exercise in understanding how high school was going to play out for you. It kept you looking forward to those fun times ahead.
Saved by the Bell set a standard in pop culture for teenage melodrama. The show ran from 1989 to 1993. But afterwards, gave birth to less successful spin-offs and TV movies. Numerous copycat shows now compete for the attention of teenage viewers.
The teenage years return for all of us in this ‘Saved by the Bell’ reunion skit.
The cast you see here looks a bit older, but not incredibly different. Mr. Belding is a bit heavier, but the charm remains. The jokes reference either things that happened during the series, or the actors own career moves after leaving Saved By the Bell, along with Jimmy Fallon’s career moves.
I did catch Mark-Paul Gosselaar in an off-Broadway play some years back. “Zach Morris is back in business!” I thought. The play was good, but it was strange that he wasn’t trumpeted for his Saved by the Bell role. You wouldn’t otherwise know it was the same guy.
