With simple lines and colors, a silent and graceful blue China comes to life on paper.
Liu Kai, 23, grew up in an old village in Shanxi Province, and creates ballpoint pen art full of traditional Chinese elements.
He comes from a farming family, and has never received any professional training in painting. He learned to draw with a ballpoint pen all by himself.
Liu Kai started work immediately after he graduated from high school, and practiced illustrating with a ballpoint pen during his free time. After working for two years, Liu decided to quit his job, and follow his dreams of becoming a painter.
Painting is Liu Kai’s only hobby, and he spends most of his time quietly working in a little studio. Ballpoint pen art is different from other kinds of painting.
It requires deep concentration, control, and endurance. Liu Kai said the painting of the Summer Palace took him one month to complete.
