Bottled water has become a part of our daily lives so fast it’s hard to remember a time when we didn’t drink bottled water (it wasn’t that long ago). This is the story of bottled water, and if you haven’t watched it yet, you should right now.
The video starts with a pretty amazing story. The brand Fiji Water started a marketing campaign by making the American city of Cleveland the butt of its joke.
Well, it didn’t work at all. In fact, the people in Cleveland did a little study of their own. The tests showed that a glass of Fiji cost more, tasted worst, and was less clean. That is actually a pretty consistent finding across the country. It turns out bottled water is often less regulated than tap water.
Yeah, but does bottled water taste better than tap water?
No, not really. In taste tests across the country, people chose tap water over bottled water pretty consistently. Now we have to ask ourselves, are the claims that bottled water companies make that they are just filling a demand correct? After all, I have never heard of consumers asking for a lower quality, higher priced product ever.
What’s really going on?
It turns out we really don’t need bottled water at all. Soda companies could see down the road that people would realize soda isn’t that healthy. Plus, they only make their money off selling more product. Their plan was simple—market through fear. Essentially, these large companies turned something you get for free and you desire into something you no longer desire by convincing you their product is healthier or tastier.
