‘The Simpsons’ Monumental Anime Tribute to Hayao Miyazaki

For those dedicated fans of Miyazaki’s anime with a quick eye, this is a treat for you.

Check out this Simpsons homage to Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, and see if you can pick up on all the references to his films.

If you are like me, you may need to watch it a few times, but on closer inspection, those references begin to stand out.

The films pay homage to characters from Spirited Away, My Neighbour Toroto, Porco Rosso, Kiki’s Special Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke.

How impressive is that for 1 minute 24 seconds of screen time?

The Simpsons have a real knack for weaving pop culture references into their episodes.

Whether it is a parody of GoodfellasCape Fear, or the films of Stanley Kubrick, they never disappoint.

Watch the clip a few times to catch all the references.  Or if you scroll down, thanks to a video from Slate, I’ve managed to point them out in screen grabs.

But first, try to give it a go by yourself…

It’s no wonder The Simpsons is the longest-running animated series in U.S. TV. I should have outgrown them, but nope, I haven’t. I still quote them from time to time, even if I’m the only one laughing at my own delivery.

So, how many references did you guess on your own?
