September 3rd will mark the first grand military parade to be held since Xi Jinping has taken office. It is held on a “non-National Day” for the first time. It marks the victory of the Anti-Japanese War and celebrates the 70th anniversary of victory in the World Anti-Fascist War. However, it comes with strong political implications.

Before the parade, a CCP newspaper had published an article which discloses the real purpose of this military parade.

At a recent press conference the Chinese authorities had expressed concerns that there will be over 12,000 military personnel being inspected and 84 percent of the weapons and equipment will be displayed for the first time.

In 1981, Deng Xiaoping held a grand military parade in North China when he was reinstated and gained power after the Cultural Revolution. Deng said that regardless of how much money was needed, how many troops would be mobilized, and how much of the national reserves would be spent, he was determined to hold the military parade.

Analysts are saying that the Chinese leadership considers this military parade as a golden opportunity to uplift the national spirit and showcase its military equipment. Some politicians have said the military parade will be a display of Chinese nationalism.

Since Xi Jinping came to power, he has undergone a series of anti-corruption purges in the military. To date, over 40 military officers holding high positions in the army have been deposed, and two former Vice Chairmen of Central Military Commission, Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou were also brought down.

On September 1, Ponbai.com posted an article published by the CCP newspaper, saying that Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou scandals have caused a negative impact; this military parade is to showcase the outcome of the people they got rid of.

The article further said that military parades are a display of military morale. Undeniably, the downfalls of “Military Big Tigers,” such as Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou, have had negative impacts on the military.

Analysts believe that this article has disclosed Xi Jinping’s real purpose of holding this grand military parade, which is, to showcase the outcome of his anti-corruption campaign in the military, which symbolizes that Xi has full control the military, and is a declaration of his authority in the military.
