A 40-year-old lady in Taiwan went to hospital because of abdominal pain, yet it turned out she was about to give birth.

What’s even more unexpected was the baby boy was actually gripping the mom’s contraceptive device with his hands when he was born.

Instead of being ‘born with a silver spoon in his mouth,’ the baby was born holding an intrauterine device.

Turns out this 40-year-old mother already had a son and a daughter, and the contraceptive device was put into her uterus so many years ago that she had almost forgotten about it.

Since she always thought she would never get pregnant again, and her period had been irregular for quite some time, she didn’t pay much attention to her gradually growing belly.

That day, she went to the doctor because of vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, weeping and thinking that she might have be  suffering from gynecological cancer.

However, it turned out to be a big surprise — a 30-week-old baby boy was born healthily with an intrauterine device in his hands.

Gynecologist Liang Yuling told UDN.com that oftentimes, when a mother with an intrauterine device gives birth, the device would naturally exit the body with her amnion and placenta. She was shocked when witnessing the newborn grabbing the intrauterine device at birth, and joked that it was “a magical grab.”

Cai Yonglong, director of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Tainan Hospital, pointed out the IUD prevents pregnancy by releasing copper ions that inhibit the movement of sperm. However, there is still a 1 per cent chance of getting pregnant, and it needs to be replaced by a new one every three to five years.
