A man in the American state of North Carolina has been arrested for not returning a VHS movie video that he rented way back in 2002.
As he was taking his daughter to school, James Meyers was pulled over by police on March 22 because his vehicle had a defective taillight. Upon checking his driving license (which took 20-30 minutes to do), the two police officers informed Meyers that there was a warrant out for his arrest.
“The officer said: ‘I don’t know how to tell you this, but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie Freddy Got Fingered and never returned it.’ I thought he was joking,” Meyers told WSOC, a local TV station.
Meyers said the officers were both cool and polite, but they did put him in handcuffs.
See what Meyers has to say about getting arrested below in a video he posted:
The video rental store J&J’s Video is no longer in business, but Meyers faces a $200 fine, and has to appear in court on April 27 for the misdemeanor.
Comedian Tom Green, who stared in the 2001 movie, heard about the arrest and said he would have gladly paid Myer’s fine.
“I think it’s sort of an example of how bureaucracy can get out of control,” Green told the Australian TV show The Project.
After finding out about what happened, Green said he phoned Meyers, and the two had a good laugh about the absurdity of it all.
