Once there was a little girl who sold flowers on the street. At the end of the day, after she sold most of her flowers, she gave her last rose to a beggar and went home. The beggar was shocked that he received a rose from a beautiful girl. Because he was just a beggar, no one had ever given him such a beautiful gift.
When he arrived home to his small room later that evening, he found a dirty vase in a heap of trash and added some water. He put the rose into the vase and placed it on the table. After that, he sat quietly and admired the rose.
However, he suddenly felt that such a beautiful rose deserved a nicer vase. So he cleaned the vase thoroughly and put the rose back.
After he looked at the rose for a short time, he felt the vase with a beautiful rose should not be on a dirty and cluttered table. So he started to clean and tidy up the table.
He started to enjoy the beauty of the rose again; however, he thought something wasn’t right, for the table was nice and clean, but the room was a mess. Thus, he began to clean his room, and threw out all of the trash.
After he cleaned it, his little room looked different. The rose and the clean room really changed his mood. He seemed to forget where he was, and he suddenly saw an unkempt, ragged young man in the mirror.
He did not recognize himself, and felt that he did not fit in here. He washed all of his clothes and took a bath and shaved. When he looked into the mirror again, there was a handsome young face looking back at him.
He looked in the mirror for a few more seconds, and made the decision that he did not want to be a beggar anymore. The next morning, he went out to find a job, and since he did not mind working hard, he soon found one as a dock laborer.
Perhaps because his heart contained a blooming rose, he worked hard and after a few years, he became a well-accomplished entrepreneur with his own shipping business.
A few more years passed, and he finally found the little girl who gave him the rose. He gave her half of his fortune to repay the hope that she instilled in him. With that hope, represented by a simple rose, he walked down the right path.
