Can Essential Oils Prevent Cancer or Are They Just a Beautiful Aroma?

Essential oils are most popularly known as aromatherapy, and are used easily and safely in the home or workplace. I use my essential oils daily by adding them to my bath water and anointing my perfume points. However, I never considered how they could be doing me an even greater service in a molecular level, beyond relaxation. After learning that essential oils have the potential to prevent cancer, I see essential oils in a new light.

In a passage from the Book of Revelation in the Bible, it states: “The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” In biblical times, modern medicine was not yet invented, but the people nonetheless had access to powerful chemical compounds that were extracted from common herbs, plants, flowers, and seeds, which were used to heal and prevent illnesses.

Essential oils contain the essence of the plant, including the active chemical components that have medicinal properties.

These ancient potions squeezed out of plants weren’t as sophisticated as modern medicine, or were they?

Some scientists and doctors have begun looking into essential oils and other plant extracts to understand what hidden ingredients they possess. Could they play a breakthrough role in cancer prevention and treatment? Many believe they can.

Now, we travel back to biblical times: Jesus was gifted myrrh, frankincense, and gold. Over the years, many people interpreted gold to be the precious golden metal, but in Jesus’ era, the golden herb turmeric was also used as medicine, as it has strong anti-inflammatory actions. Many believe that turmeric was the “gold” mentioned in the scriptures.

We also know that both myrrh and frankincense were used as medicine. This is to say that the ancients were not completely unarmed when it came to the treatment of many diseases. The Three Wise Men were gifting medicine to protect the health of baby Jesus.

Could essential oils play a role in cancer prevention?

When we are advised to take action to prevent cancer in the 21st century, we think of daily exercise, eating fresh fruit and vegetables, managing stress, quitting smoking and alcohol, and keeping refined and processed foods to a bare minimum. But using essential oils, which contain natural active chemical compounds, on a daily basis can be another tool that works to fight cancer on a cellular level.

Common essential oils, such as frankincense, lavender, myrrh, sandalwood, lemongrass, thyme, and many citrus fruits contain compounds that scientists have found to have a fatal impact on cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells untouched. Theoretically, the essential oils containing the chemical compounds are absorbed through the skin and enter the blood stream.

Here, they travel to any part of the body to fight cancer cells when they are at the very beginning stage of development — before you are aware. To date, this experiment has only been observed in vitro.

In other words, essential oils kill cancer cells in a petri dish; we don’t know if the same action takes place within the body. Many doctors have anecdotal evidence that the same action is taking place. Further studies to discover how we can make full use of these anti-cancer compounds are still needed.

Preliminary findings on frankincense oil, in particular, are very promising, but there may be other more effective ways to use and extract this plant’s healing properties, such as by using super-potent extracts or resins, rather than essential oil.

We are all touched by cancer

Currently, the popular treatments used in the treatment of cancer are chemotherapy and radio-therapy, both of which give the patient many difficult side-effects that can span months and years.

Using naturally occurring chemicals found in essential oils, or plant extracts, that not only kill cancer cells, but also stimulate the bodies’ own natural immune defense system, with no side-effects to suffer, sounds ideal. Perhaps the answer isn’t black or white, but rather looking at all the different treatments out there, and using the one that best fits the individual.

All families have been touched by cancer, including mine. I have watched family members pass away from this horrible and painful disease. My wish is that in the future, we are able to offer safer, less intrusive, and more effective cancer treatments with better outcomes. Maybe essential oils are a part of the solution.

In this short video, Dr. Josh Axe talks about how frankincense oil has the ability to successfully treat cancer — his discussion commences 2:40 minutes in.

How to use essential oils each day to prevent cancer

The great thing about essential oils is that they benefit the mind, body, and spirit. Using them as a daily ritual helps you to feel positive, and is very calming to the nervous system. Using lavender, frankincense and sandalwood essential oils, in particular, help to calm and center your mind. They also send health-protective molecules around your body that act as nano-soldiers that fight disease.

Simply drop one to two drops of your essential oil into the palm of your hand. Then pour a small drizzle of carrier oil, such as jojoba oil, over the drops and gently mix together. Rub the oil into your neck, chest, and arm-pits; these areas contain many arteries and veins that will transport the oils around your body quickly. Then, deeply inhale the oils on your hands — the oils travel through your nose and into your brain.

‘Prevention’ is the word

I view essential oils as another tool in my armory — my  healthy lifestyle — that prevents the development of cancer and a range of other diseases, as well as improving my emotional well-being, which also cannot be overlooked when talking health.

Do essential oils promise a cancer cure? My perspective is that there is something to be said about the simple joy of using them, and smelling a heavenly aroma that opens you up to other realms of feeling in an emotional or spiritual sense. You should never view any treatment, including essential oils, as a cure-all. Instead, you can put your efforts into prevention and use the hundreds of health-giving tools that are all around you.
