With the development of digital devices such as cell phones and tablets, the amount of time that a users eyes are exposed to blue light has been increasing. Blue light has a very short wavelength, and so produces a higher amount of energy. Over time, exposure to the blue end of the light spectrum could cause serious long-term damage to your eyes.
Lower the brightness and eat your vegetables
To keep your eyes healthy and functioning well, lower the brightness of the screen on the digital device and eat vegetables rich in lutein, such as corn, spinach, and kale. Lutein is one of two major carotenoids found as a color pigment in the human eye (macula and retina). It is thought to function as a light filter, protecting the eye tissues from sunlight damage.
Follow the 20/20/20 rule
To further reduce the harmful effects of digital devices, it is suggested that users follow the 20/20/20 rule, which means keep a distance of 20 centimeters (7.87 inches) away from the device and take a 20 second rest after using it for 20 minutes.
It also helps to protect your eyes if you remember the following while using digital devices:
- Avoid using the device in the dark
- Avoid using the device while lying down
- Avoid continuous exposure
A new light-sensitive screen has been developed that can adjust brightness and contrast according to the light that it senses in the environment. Hopefully, this new technology can reduce the harmful effects of digital devices on users’ eyes.
