In fact, the earliest script of the character for martial arts is composed of two parts—a weapon and a toe—which suggests it meant going to battle with weapons.
But later on, one part of the character changed, and it became the one shown in the picture with its two components:
- 止 (zhi) for stop
- 戈 (ge) for weapon
This also changed the meaning of the character. It shows that people realized,
