The Porsche 918 Spyder was a new model that only began production in December last year.

Just one year on, and the supercar’s first crash in Asia showed up in the streets of Shanghai.

In the early hours of Dec. 18, a Weibo blogger broke the news that a 918 Spyder smashed into a tree in Shanghai Xintiandi.

Apparently the owner lent the car to a female friend for a test drive. Unfortunately, she mistook the gas pedal for the brake, and the left front wheel hit the tree, ripping off the wheel.

The 918 Spyder’s starting price is $845,000. The owner said that his car would have to be taken to Germany to be repaired, so he decided to just let it go to avoid the bother!

Weibo users went crazy over the news, and the photos of the Porsche were shared about 20,000 times on Sina Weibo, receiving over 6,000 comments. Here’s a selection:

    User A:

His insurance company would declare bankruptcy after settling this claim.

    User B:

That roadside tree in Shanghai is really strong, isn’t it?

    User C:

I guess letting it go is actually a good idea. Think about it: He could buy a new Lamborghini for the repair fee!
