Australia’s favorite Wildlife Warrior Bindi Irwin has turned 17. She has gone from the cute little replica of her father, and blossomed into a beautiful young woman.

In an interview with Sunday Style, she opened up about how the loss of her father affected her.

“You never actually move on from it,” she says. “As a little kid, I remember people coming up to me and saying: ‘I’m so sorry [for your loss], sweetheart, but time heals all wounds.'” She pauses. “There really isn’t a greater lie. It’s just not true. It’s like losing a part of your heart. And when you’ve lost that, you never get it back. Part of you will always be missing. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with.”

Her father, Steve Irwin, was an Australian icon known as the crocodile hunter.

He died tragically in 2006 from a sting-ray attack in North Queensland while filming a documentary titled Ocean’s Deadliest.

After his passing, Bindi’s mum, Terri Irwin, didn’t give up and carried on with the work her husband had set out to do.

Her mum has been a huge inspiration to her.

“Mum is the strongest woman I know,” she says. “She’s carried on Dad’s legacy, and I don’t know anyone else who could have done it better than her. No matter what life throws at us, she’s unchangeable. I want to be like her as I grow up,” she told Sunday Style.

And it looks like Bindi has also found a great boyfriend, American wakeboarder Chandler Powell, who is 18.

“I was blessed to meet Chandler and his family back in November 2013,” she says. “We remained in touch and stayed friends. Since then, our friendship has developed into something really special,” Sunday Style reported.

Despite her hectic schedule, Bindi enjoys quiet times.

“My favorite thing in the world is going out to get Chinese food, then coming home and renting a movie,” she says. “A friend of mine just sent me the translated work of a German poet, Rilke, and I’m starting that, too. I’d rather be at home drinking tea and reading a book than anything else. I’m not very crazy,” she told the publication.

Bindi is a very inspirational young woman who has already made a positive difference in the world.
