Zhao Muhe is a native of Shandong Province in China. He came from a family of landlords. When he was young, he fled to Taiwan and eventually retired from an ordinary administrative job at the age of 66. However, he was not content with retired life, so at age 75, he bought a backpack and a few supplies, and traveled to Europe.
His friends advised him not to go. They said to him:
“You are old, with little money, and speak only two English words – yes and no; going to Europe is looking for trouble.”
He thought otherwise. If he had to have plenty of money and speak fluent English, he may have to wait three lifetimes before he could travel. He went to Europe and came back five months later after touring Great Britain, France, and Germany, all for just $1,000.
When his grandson took a college entrance exam, he did the same to keep him company. Unfortunately, neither of them scored high enough on the exam to be accepted. After that experience, he discovered that learning was the secret of a long life.
He decided to retake the entrance exam with his grandson, and both of them passed! When he was preparing to leave for college, a friend said to him:
“I’ll kneel down to you if you graduate.”
Four years later, he obtained his bachalor’s degree, and those who doubted him finally had nothing to say, including his friend.
After graduation, he did not want to stay home, so at 93, he volunteered at a hospital caring for patients much younger than him.
At 98, he went back to school once more and earned his master’s degree. Currently, he is 105, and his miraculous life continues to move forward.
