In 1966, 10 women suffering from cervical cancer were the first group of patients to receive laser treatment in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China. The condition of one 54-year-old patient was serious. Nevertheless, she was the only survivor in the group. In the eyes of her family, is was a miracle recovery due to her open mind in an otherwise ordinary life.

The laser treatment trial

The first group of patients underwent a laser treatment trial in 1966, the hospital in Qingdao City procured a laser system specifically for cancer treatments. At that time, it was the most advanced and unique piece of equipment in the city. Ten women from a group of confirmed cases of cervical cancer were selected. Following a contract signed by both parties, a treatment trial of 26 days duration was commenced.

The condition of Show-Yu Wang, one of the 10, was at the mid-point of the range of severity compared to the others. Doctors in charge also gave her a 50 percent chance of survival. Wang and her husband were blue-collar workers. The reason that she decided to join the trial was that it was highly recommended by the doctor. Besides, the hospital offered a special deal by charging her just 1.25 RMB ($US0.20) per day, since it was the first trial of laser treatment. The fee was much lower than other treatments, which significantly reduced the financial burden on the family.

Wang was the only survivor after the laser surgery due to her open mind.

Family matters

Living an ordinary life, Show-Yu Wang was born into a large family with several scores of people. Her family had been fishermen for generations. There were always various kinds of seafood on the table at each meal.

Genetically, Wang’s family members became overweight after 40 years old and then developed coronary heart disease and hypertension. Like her mother, brothers, and sisters, Show-Yu also developed an overweight condition on becoming middle aged. Despite her self-control, even though she reduced her food consumption, she still grew a pot belly. Her family also had a history of diabetes, but not cancers.

Wang’s daughter recalled that her mother lived normally during her cancer treatment trial. Her mother did not think much about her own sickness, just simply taking the laser treatment for 26 consecutive days as if it was a routine procedure. She never mentioned her condition to her family, neither did she reveal the details of the treatment.

 Remission

After the trial session, it was confirmed that all 10 patients’ cancer cells were removed. Subsequently, the 10 women were asked to return to the hospital for follow-up checks every three months. Wang was surprised to find out that all the other women in her group experienced a recurrence of cancer and died.

Wang passed every check without one single cancer cell reappearing. She lived healthily except for slightly more frequent urination.

The simple, ordinary woman had survived a real death threat. She lived peacefully for another 30 years with her husband and all her children accompanying her on the final journey. What saved Show-Yu Wang was her open-minded character and not worrying about her fate.

Wang’s open mind helped her survive

Wang’s children said: “Our mom was open-minded, never preoccupied. She let go of everything. She was never bothered by cancer.” They believe that their mom’s open-minded and open-hearted character conquered cancer because she remained unaffected by it.

Wang’s daughter said: “My mom never told me she had cancer. She let me know only after the treatment sessions were completed. She believed that a person’s lifetime is preset by God. So she was not afraid of death or sickness.”

Wang’s son described his mother as “an ethical person, who emphasized merit and good deeds. She never did any wrongdoing in her life. She had no concern for cancer, and the whole family was not bothered by her cancer either. She simply followed the doctor’s instructions to take the treatment.”
