President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, recently admitted in an interview with CBS News that the laptop at the center of a scandal regarding his foreign dealings may belong to him. Last year, the New York Post published a story about a laptop that was dropped off at a repair shop in Delaware in 2019. It contained emails regarding Hunter’s business with the Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma and a Chinese energy conglomerate. The laptop was eventually handed over to the FBI.

During the interview with CBS, the president’s son stated that he “really don’t know” who owns the laptop. When pressed further, Hunter acknowledged that he may be the owner of the laptop. He also claimed he could be a victim.

“It could be that I was hacked. It could be that it was the — that it was Russian intelligence. It could be that it was stolen from me,” Hunter said in the interview.

Hunter’s interview comes soon after NPR had to change its claim about the laptop. In a review of Hunter’s book, NPR supported Hunter’s innocence. The media outlet stated that the laptop being the property of the president’s son had been discredited by U.S. intelligence as well as news organizations’ independent investigations. These were false statements. NPR recently issued a correction, stating that U.S. intelligence officials have not discredited the possibility of Hunter being the owner.

According to CNN, a source from the FBI confirmed that the agency is conducting the investigation under the assumption that the laptop is owned by Hunter. The department is still determining the integrity of its contents. It is also unclear whether the information on the laptop is relevant to an investigation being conducted into Hunter’s business dealings with communist China. Delaware federal prosecutors are leading the investigation, working together with the FBI and the IRS. They are looking to verify whether Hunter and his associates violated money laundering and tax laws in their Chinese transactions.

Republican Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson have sent a letter to the intelligence community and the Department of Justice. They asked that documents related to Hunter’s dealings with CCP-linked foreigners be handed over to Congress. The senators asked for the materials to be sent to the committees of which they are members. Johnson is a ranking member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations; Grassley is a ranking member of the Judiciary Committee.

“As you know, we have been reviewing financial transactions and connections between and among members of the Biden family and foreign nationals connected to the communist Chinese government, including its military and intelligence services… Hunter Biden had a close and personal relationship with Ye Jianming, who reportedly had links to the communist regime’s People’s Liberation Army,” Senators Grassley and Johnson wrote in the letter.

Hunter is also accused of breaking two laws. Firstly, he is accused of smuggling guests, including an ex-stripper, into a Washington D.C building owned by the Swedish government that housed several embassies. This incident happened sometime after Feb. 2017 when he had rented office space in the building. Secondly, Hunter allegedly made a gun purchase in 2018 and lied about his history of drug use.
