Audience members and arts professionals in Japan offered high praise for Shen Yun following its April 13 performance at J:COM Hall Hachioji, describing the immersive production as a rare fusion of technical mastery, spiritual depth, and cultural authenticity.
The performance, which combines classical Chinese dance, a live orchestra, and a dynamic digital backdrop, drew attendees from across the country, including some who traveled from as far as Hokkaido. From its powerful opening to its lingering finale, the show received sustained applause, with many audience members remaining in the theater lobby afterward to reflect on the experience and explore its artistic themes.

‘Unmatched precision and grace’
Among the attendees was Ms. Saito, an octogenarian gymnastics instructor with over two decades of teaching experience. Known for her keen eye for movement, she said she was deeply impressed by the performers’ technique.

“This is my first time seeing Shen Yun, it’s outstanding,” she said. “I also teach gymnastics, so I understand the difficulty behind these movements. The performers’ uniformity and precision, and the combination of strength and softness, are truly unmatched.”

She also highlighted Shen Yun’s digital backdrop, noting that its seamless integration with live performance created a striking visual effect unlike anything she had seen before.
‘Divine beauty’ rooted in tradition
Hasegawa, an associate professor at J. F. Oberlin University, attended after previously missing a performance in Yokohama. With an academic background in language education and frequent interaction with Chinese students, he expressed a long-standing interest in traditional culture, but said Shen Yun exceeded his expectations.
He was particularly moved by what he described as the “divine beauty” presented on stage. “This is not just sensory beauty,” Hasegawa said. “Through learning more about it, I understand that Shen Yun performers focus not only on physical training but also on spiritual cultivation. This inner discipline is expressed through dance and music, creating a resonance that reaches directly into the heart.”

He added that the integration of music, dance, and spiritual meaning formed a rare artistic harmony. Upon learning that such performances cannot currently be staged in mainland China, he expressed regret, noting that traditional culture is a shared heritage that should not be marginalized.
Inspiring the next generation
For younger artists, Shen Yun offered both inspiration and a learning opportunity. Ms. Watanabe, a musical theater performer accustomed to Broadway-style productions and modern jazz dance, said she was struck by the expressive range of classical Chinese dance.

She observed the contrast between male and female performers: The men displayed strength and dynamism, while the women embodied grace and fluidity — together creating a powerful stage presence.
Watanabe also praised Shen Yun’s commitment to preserving traditional culture. She said she hopes to incorporate elements of the dancers’ upper body and arm techniques into her own work to enrich her artistic expression.
An evening of cultural discovery
For Ms. Zhenmei Mami, a professional dance instructor from nearby Kanagawa Prefecture, the performance held personal significance. It was a birthday gift from her mother, who had discovered Shen Yun through online advertisements. The two attended together, fulfilling a long-held wish.

As a dance educator, Mami was particularly impressed by the intricate costumes. Despite the demanding choreography, performers handled long sleeves and flowing garments with remarkable control, showcasing the elegance of traditional attire from different dynasties.
More importantly, she said the performance transcended cultural and linguistic boundaries. “Regardless of cultural background, people share a common longing for beauty and kindness,” she said. “After watching the performance, I even felt inspired to learn classical Chinese dance myself.”
‘A completely different experience’
The audience also included visitors who had traveled long distances. One attendee who flew in from Hokkaido said she remained deeply moved after the performance. A practitioner of ballroom dance, she praised the live orchestra, noting the precise coordination between music and movement. She described the dancers’ physical ability as extraordinary, with each leap and kick appearing effortless despite the evident rigor behind it.
“Watching it on television and seeing it live are completely different experiences,” she said. “The impact and emotion you feel in the theater cannot be put into words.”
Shen Yun’s performance in Hachioji highlighted the enduring appeal of traditional culture across borders and generations. From seasoned educators to young performers, audience members found both artistic inspiration and spiritual resonance in the production. Many described the experience as not only visually and musically captivating, but also deeply meaningful.
