A mysterious and severe wave of respiratory infections has been overwhelming hospitals across China, triggering concerns about a possible public health disaster. From packed hospitals to skyrocketing funeral home demand, reports from citizens and whistleblowers suggest a health crisis that authorities are trying to keep under wraps.
While the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) insists the situation is “under control,” disturbing accounts from residents paint a grim reality of mass infections, overwhelmed crematoriums, and a growing fear that vaccinations may be linked to the surge in illness.

Hospitals in crisis
Across multiple provinces, Chinese citizens report that hospitals — especially cancer treatment centers — are operating beyond capacity. Viral videos on social media, later censored, show enormous crowds in hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and other major cities, with patients struggling to secure appointments.
A Beijing resident described the dire state of medical facilities as people frantically search for answers to explain the mysterious surge in respiratory illnesses. “Apart from rush-hour traffic, the only places packed with people are hospitals,” the user said, adding that obtaining medical attention has become a grueling challenge as many find themselves battling severe cough-like symptoms resembling pneumonia.

A similar situation is unfolding in Shanghai, where a 42-year-old man battling cancer said he started feeling ill shortly after taking the COVID-19 vaccine. “I took the vaccine and never felt well afterward,” said the man who declined to share his name. “Three years later, I have cancer. I have elderly parents and young children — what am I supposed to do?”
In Jilin Province, a shocking scene at an oncology center showed long lines of patients waiting for treatment. A family member of a cancer patient broke down in tears, explaining that hospitalization alone costs 30,000 yuan per month, with total monthly expenses exceeding 100,000 yuan (about USD$14,000) even with insurance coverage. “The doctor told us if we don’t have enough money, we shouldn’t bother seeking treatment. What are we supposed to do?” said the user in between tears.
Crematoriums maxed out
Meanwhile, a parallel health crisis is pushing China’s funeral industry to its limits. A recent outbreak of severe respiratory illnesses has filled hospitals and morgues, leaving many desperate to secure cremation services.
Residents across China report funeral homes operating non-stop, with some families needing connections in order to have their deceased loved ones cremated in a timely manner. “A coffin that usually costs 4,000 yuan is now selling for 12,000 yuan, and coffins are sold out because there are so many deaths,” said a resident near Shijiazhuang.
A resident from Tangshan in Hebei Province described the situation as apocalyptic. “The crematoriums are running at full capacity. We need connections just to get a funeral slot. It feels like the end of the world.” Another resident from Shijiazhuang noted that the streets were eerily empty, adding, “It’s very quiet now. Public transport is less crowded, and traffic congestion has disappeared.”
Despite mounting evidence of a severe outbreak, Chinese authorities continue to downplay the situation. Official data from China’s National Administration of Disease Control and Prevention reported 2.8 million flu infections in January 2025 — a sharp increase from December’s 1.5 million cases. However, the government claims that only nine people died from the illness. These figures are widely disputed by whistleblowers and independent sources who argue that the real numbers are significantly higher.
Vaccine concerns
A growing number of citizens, healthcare professionals, and independent analysts suspect that China’s mass vaccination campaign may have contributed to the crisis. Many individuals, including those previously in good health, reported developing severe illnesses following their COVID-19 shots. Some link repeated infections with a weakened immune system caused by the vaccine, while others argue that new viral strains may have evolved due to widespread immunization.
“This wave of infections is a direct result of the government’s mandatory vaccinations,” said Li, a resident of Zhumandian, Henan Province, adding, “Many people’s immunity has collapsed, leading to repeated infections and complications from norovirus, mycoplasma pneumonia, adenovirus, and many other diseases.” Similarly, Zhang, from Shaanxi Province, expressed concerns over rising cases of sudden deaths. “So many people I know are falling sick again and again. Their bodies simply can’t fight off diseases anymore.”
Experts are also raising red flags. Sean Lin, a former microbiologist for the U.S. Army and current assistant professor in the biomedical science department at U.S.-based Feitian College, suggests that multiple viruses — including influenza subtypes, COVID-19, and avian flu — are now circulating simultaneously. “The most worrying thing is whether the highly pathogenic avian influenza is spreading among the human population,” Lin told The Epoch Times.
Lin also warns that mass vaccination campaigns may have driven the virus to mutate by allowing “the simultaneous spread of multiple viruses and the weakening of people’s immune systems.”

A silent massacre
As reports of overcrowded hospitals and rising deaths flood social media, the Chinese government has intensified its censorship efforts. Critics argue that the CCP is deliberately hiding the severity of the outbreak, just as it did during the early days of COVID-19. A former Chinese journalist, Zhao Lanjian, claims that the country is experiencing “a vaccine disaster” and a “silent massacre.” He revealed that funeral directors in northeastern China have reported that “the number of deaths continue to rise everyday.”
Zhao also criticized the government’s refusal to acknowledge vaccine-related complications: “Not only is the CCP failing to investigate post-vaccine side effects, but it is actively suppressing any discussion on the matter.”
He also pointed to the ongoing overload in crematoriums, the surge in cancer diagnoses, and the increase in sudden deaths as evidence of a larger, more sinister cover-up. “The government won’t tell you the truth. They are censoring any voice that questions the narrative on social media. But the truth doesn’t disappear — this ‘silent massacre’ is happening right now.”
