When Vinny Katris opened Middletown Tire & Auto in 2007, he wasn’t following a business plan—he was following his instincts. After years working in Chester and nearly leaving for a county job, he realized the secure career he envisioned wasn’t going to happen. So he made a bold choice.
“I got some money together, refinanced my house, and I found a place,” Katris recalled. “That’s how it started.”
Nearly 18 years later, Middletown Tire & Auto has become one of the most trusted auto repair shops in the Hudson Valley, known for transparency, quality work, and treating every customer “like family.”
Building a business one customer at a time
The early days weren’t easy. “The biggest challenge was getting more customers in the door,” Katris said. “Word of mouth is the key. For me, that’s golden.”
His approach was simple: “Talk to people. Be nice to people. Make sure the work is quality. If they like you, they’ll tell the next person.”

Over time, that philosophy created a loyal customer base that spans generations. “I’ve got customers I’ve been dealing with for over 30 years,” he said. “I’ve seen their kids grow up, get married, have babies.”
Katris learned mechanics from the best teacher he knew—his father, who immigrated from Greece with a third-grade education and worked in a garage in New York City.
“When I was 12, after school I’d go pump gas with my dad, do oil changes,” he said. “You learn it hands-on.”
Although Katris now spends more time at the front desk, he still helps in the garage when needed. “I’ll do tires, oil changes—not too crazy—but I’ve gotta be here to answer the phone,” he said.
Listening to customers, he emphasized, is part of the job. “Customers will tell you what’s wrong. You just have to listen.”
Honesty, safety, and doing the right thing
The shop’s reputation for transparency and honest pricing comes from Katris’s years observing what works—and what doesn’t—in the industry.
“As long as you’re nice to people and you do the right thing, that’s the most important part,” he said. “I try to teach everybody here to do the same.”
His commitment to safety is personal. “My kids are on the road. My wife drives. You drive. I’m gonna make sure your car is safe,” he said.
That level of care is why many customers travel long distances—sometimes over two hours—to bring their vehicles to Middletown.
“I have someone coming from the Bronx,” Katris said. “He said he can’t find anybody good. People come from Connecticut, Monticello, all over.”
Beyond reliable repair work, customers describe Middletown Tire & Auto as a place where they feel genuinely cared for.
One reviewer wrote: “Great, professional, courteous, honest!”
Another shared: “They arranged tire replacements the same day and even gave me the key to remove the wheels. The attention to detail did not go unnoticed.”
A longtime customer added: “Middletown Tire & Auto is built on trust, integrity, and genuine care… They treat every customer like family.”
Katris’s bond with customers is deep. “I went to a customer’s wedding a couple months ago,” he said. “When my father passed away, customers came to the funeral.”
He’s also known for helping young people in the community. “I tell kids, if your mom and dad aren’t around, come here. I’ll take care of you. You don’t have money—we’ll worry about it later.”
Teamwork and gratitude
Katris credits his employees for helping the shop run smoothly. “I leave them alone,” he said. “They know the cars have to be safe. They’re not commission-based.”
Despite working long hours—often six days a week—Katris doesn’t expect his children to follow in his footsteps. His daughter is a teacher, and his son works in fiber optics. “I want them to do something different,” he said.
As Thanksgiving approaches, Katris reflected on what he’s most grateful for:
“Family, friends, mentors, and customers. Loyal customers are very important.”
Nearly two decades after he opened his doors, the heart of Middletown Tire & Auto remains unchanged: honesty, hard work, and treating people right.
“When we’re busy and the customers are coming in, that’s when it feels good,” Katris said. “That means we’re doing something right.”
Middletown Tire & Auto, located at 480 East Main Street, continues to prioritize upfront pricing, fast service, and customer satisfaction.
