On Monday, Nov. 24, hundreds of drivers in New York held a large-scale convoy protest at Columbus Circle in Manhattan, demanding that Governor Kathy Hochul and state legislators in Albany take urgent action to curb skyrocketing car insurance rates and ease the financial burden on ordinary residents.

Protesters expressed their anger by honking horns, displaying banners, and slowly circling Columbus Circle. The signs read:

  • “Car insurance costs more than rent—we can’t survive!”
  • “Governor Hochul: Stop ignoring us!”
  • “Reform the insurance system now, give New York drivers a lifeline!”

Participants in the protest included:

  • Taxi, rideshare, and private car drivers struggling with high premiums
  • Community advocates from Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and other areas
  • Local elected officials and labor organization representatives

Drivers called on the state government to:

  1. Immediately freeze and reduce car insurance premiums
  2. Reform the current insurance pricing system and crack down on unreasonable rate hikes by insurers
  3. Increase subsidies for car insurance for low-income families

The protest was organized jointly by multiple driver mutual aid groups and community organizations, with hundreds of vehicles participating, which created a striking scene. Organizers warned that if the governor and state legislature continue to ignore the issue, they plan to launch even larger protests, including sit-ins at the Albany state capitol.

New York drivers have reached their breaking point: car insurance should not become the last straw crushing ordinary families.
