On the afternoon of May 11, 2025, Shen Yun’s New Era Company concluded its final performance in Nashville, Tennessee to a sold-out crowd, bringing the curtain down on the company’s 2025 global touring season.

Across nearly five months, Shen Yun’s eight touring companies performed close to 800 shows in almost 200 cities across 26 countries and five continents, drawing more than one million audience members worldwide. Many described the experience as a rare cultural journey, one that reconnects modern viewers with a vision of classical Chinese civilization.

Made up of a large ensemble of elite artists comprising more than 500 dancers, musicians, and vocalists, Shen Yun currently has eight equally-sized companies that tour and perform across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania simultaneously. The company puts on a brand new production each year

A global phenomenon

Since Shen Yun’s founding in 2006, the company has expanded its reach dramatically, earning enthusiastic praise from international audiences. Its growing influence has prompted a recurring question: What explains Shen Yun’s remarkable global success?

One key reason lies in its artistic positioning. In an era often dominated by fragmented, commercialized, and highly modernized entertainment, Shen Yun offers something strikingly different: a stage production that presents traditional Chinese culture and values through a lens of spiritual heritage, moral symbolism, and classical aesthetics.

As one audience member in France told reporters: “Shen Yun’s artistic achievements are astonishing, and the professionalism and superb skills of the performers are amazing. The entire performance presents a connection, a connection between the modern world and tradition, and between the modern world and the divine, and this experience is very impressive.”

That sense of connection, between past and present, culture and transcendence, forms the foundation of Shen Yun’s appeal. But how exactly is this “traditional and spiritual beauty” expressed?

‘China before communism’

Across Shen Yun’s repertoire, programs vary widely in story and setting, yet they are unified by a central narrative thread: the presentation of China’s “5,000 years of divinely inspired culture,” often framed as a vision of “China before communism.”

Within this structure, tradition is not treated as a museum artifact, but as a living moral order, one rooted in reverence for heaven, ethical responsibility, and the belief that history carries spiritual meaning.

Many dance dramas depict virtuous rulers who govern through humility and alignment with higher principles, emphasizing ideals such as selflessness, righteousness, and benevolent rule. Others draw from Buddhist and Daoist folklore, portraying divine figures intervening in moments of crisis, reinforcing the traditional worldview that moral goodness is ultimately protected.

This recurring motif, humans existing within a broader cosmic order, distinguishes Shen Yun from purely secular historical spectacle.

A battle between good and evil

Another defining feature of Shen Yun’s storytelling is its use of Chinese mythology, not merely as legend, but as moral architecture.

Productions such as Nezha Conquers the Dragon King dramatize resistance against tyranny through sacrifice and renewal, visually contrasting forces of righteousness and corruption. Similarly, adaptations of Journey to the West emphasize the enduring belief that “good ultimately triumphs over evil.”

These mythic narratives function as more than entertainment; they offer audiences a symbolic universe where justice is not arbitrary, but embedded in a larger spiritual logic.

Traditional values

Beyond myth, Shen Yun frequently turns to historical themes to revive Confucian values such as loyalty, filial devotion, honor, and duty.

Stories like that of General Yue Fei portray patriotism and moral integrity as transcendent virtues. Through restrained choreography and solemn musical composition, historical figures are presented not simply as textbook characters, but as embodiments of cultural conscience.

In this way, Shen Yun activates collective memory, reintroducing traditional ethics through emotionally resonant performance.

A multi-sensory sage experience

Shen Yun’s impact is also shaped by its distinctive theatrical language. The production combines classical Chinese dance, orchestral music blending Eastern and Western instrumentation, vivid costume symbolism, and immersive digital backdrops.

Rather than relying on spoken dialogue, the performance communicates through movement, color, rhythm, and visual metaphor. Many viewers describe the result as an experience that is not only aesthetic, but contemplative, inviting reflection on faith, identity, and cultural inheritance.

A spiritual aesthetic in a fragmented age

In a world increasingly defined by speed, spectacle, and moral ambiguity, Shen Yun’s deliberate emphasis on reverence, transcendence, and traditional order offers something rare: a performance that seeks not only to entertain, but to awaken cultural memory and ethical imagination.

Its success, then, may lie in its ability to provide modern audiences with more than artistry alone, offering instead a vision of meaning, rooted in tradition, spiritual symbolism, and the enduring human search for moral clarity.
