According to Reuters, the first-ever IndyCar Series race to be held in Washington, D.C. will take place on Aug. 23 as part of the “America 250” celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. The event, called the “Freedom 250 Grand Prix,” will feature a street circuit running through downtown Washington.

Ed Carpenter, owner and driver of Ed Carpenter Racing, made a special appearance on WTOP radio on Wednesday, May 20, to discuss the upcoming race. Carpenter said, “It’s going to be an amazing, unique event — obviously celebrating our country’s 250th birthday. It’s going to be a unique and iconic event for us, racing around the Mall and having the Capitol in the background. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The 1.66-mile circuit will loop around the National Mall, stretching between 3rd Street and 9th Street, and using sections of Pennsylvania Avenue, Maryland Avenue, and Independence Avenue. The track will feature seven turns. Organizers have already begun constructing grandstands along the course. The public can visit the Grand Prix’s official website to explore the circuit through a virtual tour and register for free tickets to attend the event. Preliminary activities will begin on Aug. 22, with the main race taking place on Aug. 23.

Carpenter also holds another unique record — he is tied with other drivers for the most appearances in the Indianapolis 500 without ever winning the race, having competed 22 times so far. He is also set to participate in the 2026 Indianapolis 500 this Sunday. Carpenter said, “It’ll be my 23rd attempt at the Indy 500, so I’ve been doing it a long time. It’s still extremely special every year. It’s the largest single-day sporting event in the world, so it’s an honor to be part of it.”
