On Nov. 5, former U.S. President and Republican nominee Donald J. Trump declared victory in the 2024 presidential election before official results were in. Though two of the seven battleground states are still counting ballots, the Associated Press (AP) has called the race for Trump as of Nov. 6, projecting his win over Vice President Kamala Harris with 295 electoral votes.
But Trump’s early declaration of victory quickly rose to the top of trending topics on Chinese social media, stirring a mix of support, humor, and apprehension among Chinese netizens. The news — first reported by various international outlets — quickly gained traction as state-backed Chinese media offered brief but clear acknowledgment of Trump’s claim.
Xinhua, China’s leading news agency, issued a one-line statement confirming the announcement, which promptly sent the phrase “Trump Announces Victory” surging to the top of China’s trending lists.
Mixed reactions
Trump’s declaration reflects his continued influence on both U.S. and international politics. After losing the presidency four years ago, Trump’s return could represent one of the most remarkable political comebacks in American history. As world leaders offer their congratulations, some of Trump’s international supporters expressed optimism that his administration might herald a shift in U.S.-China relations.
Numerous Chinese users on social media praised Trump as a “stabilizing force” for global peace, with many feeling hopeful that his leadership will bring an end to long-standing conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel-Palestine tensions.

“Congratulations to Mr. Trump,” said one netizen in a comment that netted hundreds of likes. “May this bring a fresh dynamic to U.S.-China relations.” This sentiment was echoed widely, with users describing Trump as a “defender of peace” and even nominating him in jest for a future Nobel Peace Prize. For Trump’s loyal supporters abroad, particularly those who followed his policies closely, the news of his apparent victory was nothing short of triumphant.

Despite the cheers, some Chinese social media users were quick to respond with humor. One user jokingly commented, “An 80-year-old comeback — truly one for the history books.” Others made lighthearted remarks about their bets and predictions, with one disappointed user admitting, “I lost a bet to my colleague — I thought Trump’s opponent would win.”
Tesla’s founder Elon Musk — a known Trump ally — also became part of the online conversation. Musk’s support for Trump led one user to comment that Tesla’s stock would be “secured” following the announcement, a likely reference to Musk’s vocal support of Trump’s policies.
Trepidation and admiration
However, many in China also expressed trepidation at the prospect of another Trump-led administration, especially regarding trade relations and how this could affect the two super economies. Trump’s previous tenure was marked by an aggressive trade war with China, characterized by increased tariffs and sanctions that disrupted U.S.-China economic relations.

Some Chinese netizens urged caution, stating, “Prepare for the hard days ahead. Another trade war might be upon us.” Such concerns highlight the impact of Trump’s economic policies on Chinese exports, with users speculating about potential tariffs and supply chain disruptions should trade relations deteriorate once again.
“New sanctions and trade battles are likely. Stock up and prepare!” wrote one Chinese netizen who expressed anxiety over the potential economic repercussions. “Another wave of layoffs could be imminent.”
In addition to reactions within China, Trump’s victory announcement drew attention from overseas Chinese speakers. One such social media user wrote, “If God has a plan for you, even the most dangerous threats cannot succeed,” it said. “Trump is destined to make America great again.”
Trump’s return to the White House comes amid a global climate of political turbulence and economic instability. For China, a renewed Trump presidency could mean another chapter in an ongoing saga of economic tension and rivalry with the U.S. However, the overall reactions in China suggest that Trump’s influence transcends borders.
