Middletown, NY – On Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, the vibrant streets of historic downtown Middletown came alive with the energy for the 19th annual Run4Downtown (R4DT), a beloved 4-mile run/walk that, this year, drew approximately 500 participants and over 2,000 spectators.

Since its inception in 2006, sparked by the owners of the Italian-inspired restaurant Piccolo Cucina e Vino, this event has raised over $150,000 for the restoration of downtown Middletown, fostering community pride and revitalization.

The event, held on a sunny August morning, kicked off with packet pickup and registration at R4DT Park from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., followed by the walker start at 8:45 a.m. Female runners took off at 9:00 a.m., with males following at 9:02 a.m., reflecting the event’s unique challenge format where females receive a head start—2 minutes and 55 seconds this year—based on the prior years’ finishing times. The day culminated in a lively post-race party at Equilibrium Brewery, a “Flavors without Borders Taste of Downtown” food festival on North Street, a YMCA Funzone for kids, and an awards ceremony at 10:45 a.m.

Participants of all ages and backgrounds shared their enthusiasm for the event. Alejandro from Kingston, a first-time runner, completed the 4 miles in 34 minutes, and sang to keep the experience fun despite the heat. “I started running two months ago to get exercise, and my buddy bet he was faster,” Alejandro said. “I found this event on Instagram and said, ‘Let’s see who wins!’ I’ll definitely be back next year.”

Brady Drogo and Pablo Leon, also first-time participants, ran to stay healthy and push their fitness goals. “We run every day, so this was a chance to get in shape and have fun,” Brady shared, with his wife and father cheering him on. “It’s exciting to see the youth out here,” Brady’s dad added, proud to support the community’s young athletes.

Gail, a second-year participant, and her cousin Sous, a first-timer, embraced the challenge to test their limits. “Four miles pushes what I can do,” Gail said. “It’s fun, and it helps me prepare for soccer and future races.” Sous, a regular runner, joined after Gail’s encouragement, finding the event a great way to connect with the running community.

Daisy Ramos, a Middletown nurse and four-year R4DT veteran, celebrated her win in the 60-and-over age group and her team’s victory for having the most members signed up. “This event is amazing,” Daisy said. “Our Thursday running group, Team Piccolo, loves coming together. The camaraderie is what makes it special.”

Team Piccolo and the Northern Academy of Middletown both claimed top prizes, showcasing the strength and spirit of the local community. A member of the Northern Academy shared, “My daughter and I walked as fast as we could, and it felt like a big party. The mariachi music, good food, and post-race celebration were so fun. Our small team of about 25 won, and we’re thrilled!”

Local businesses and organizations played a vital role in the event’s success. Marshall & Sterling Insurance, the primary sponsor since 2018, emphasized their commitment to community involvement. Vice President Brian Siegerman noted, “We love giving back to Middletown. The feedback from participants is so positive, and we’re proud to support the Run 4 Downtown committee, the mayor, and the kids.”

Vendors added to the festive atmosphere at the Flavors without Borders Taste of Downtown. Rakesh Nayak, owner of Mister Croissant Bakery & Cafe, offered organic chocolate walnut cookies that delighted attendees. One pedestrian raved, “You can tell it’s real chocolate by how it melts. It makes you happy!” Nayak, a practitioner of Falun Dafa, also used the event to share flyers promoting truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance, while connecting with the community through his year-old business.

Community organizations shone brightly as well. Sarah Belknap, an advisor for the Middletown High School National Honor Society, oversaw student volunteers at a water station, helping them fulfill service requirements.

With over $1,500 in cash prizes, including $400 for first place and $200 for breaking the course record, the R4DT motivated runners to push their limits while celebrating Middletown’s spirit.
