For 32 years, Rolling Thunder Audio, led by owner Dave Helale, has been a cornerstone of the local community, bringing high-quality car audio installations, remote starters, and accessories to car enthusiasts. Now 59, Dave reflects on his remarkable journey from a self-taught hobbyist to a respected business owner who has weathered challenges and built a legacy of trust and excellence.
In 1993, at the age of 27, Dave found himself at a crossroads after losing his job at a wire factory. With a wife, a young child, and just $3,500 to his name, he took a leap of faith, turning his hobby of car audio installation into a full-fledged business. “I had no formal training, never worked in a car stereo shop, nothing,” Dave recalls. “But I loved cars, and my wife said, ‘Why don’t we do this for a living?’ So, I opened the shop and learned as I went.”
With grit and determination, Dave taught himself the trade, relying on manufacturer seminars, tech support, and hands-on experience. His slogan, “Roll with the Best,” captures the spirit of Rolling Thunder Audio: delivering top-notch products and services that make cars come alive with sound and functionality. “You put stereos in cars, and the cars roll,” Dave explains with a smile. “So, you’re gonna roll with the best stuff from Rolling Thunder Audio.”
Overcoming Challenges with Perseverance
Starting a business from scratch wasn’t easy. “The first couple of years, we didn’t really make any money,” Dave admits. Yet, he never gave up. Even during tough times, like the early days of the business or the current challenge of finding reliable workers, Dave’s commitment to his craft and customers kept him going. “You make mistakes, just like anybody else,” he says, “but I always gave the customer what they needed.”
Surprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be a busy time for Rolling Thunder Audio. “People had extra money, and they wanted to make their cars better,” Dave notes. Unlike the usual slow season when families focus on back-to-school expenses, the shop thrived as customers invested in upgrades. Dave credits his son, who works alongside him, for helping keep the business running smoothly during challenging times.

A Commitment to Community
Rolling Thunder Audio isn’t just a business—it’s a vital part of the community. Over the years, Dave has given back through fundraisers and by mentoring students from BOCES in Goshen, teaching them the art of car audio installation. “We’ve done different things to support the community,” he says, pointing to certificates and trophies from grateful customers and organizations. One cherished memory is a wooden logo of Rolling Thunder Audio crafted by a customer—a testament to the appreciation Dave’s work has earned.
Customers value Dave’s honesty, fairness, and expertise, as reflected in glowing online reviews. “We have more experience than anybody in the county,” he says proudly, emphasizing the hands-on knowledge that sets his shop apart. Despite trends like customers buying products online, Dave encourages them to trust professionals for quality installations. “Go to a store, let them sell it to you and do the work,” he advises. “That way, you know it’s done right.”
Advice for the Next Generation
As Dave looks to the future, he dreams of finding dedicated workers to carry on the legacy of Rolling Thunder Audio, allowing him to take a well-earned break. Reflecting on his journey, he offers heartfelt advice to young entrepreneurs: “Find what you love early in life, because if you find it too late, you don’t get enough time to do it.” He acknowledges the challenges of running a small business—long hours, high costs, and constant responsibility—but encourages perseverance. “It’s not easy, but don’t give up on your dream. Learn about the business, ask questions, and be ready to work hard.”
