For nearly 70 years, Smith Plumbing & Heating/Kitchen & Bath has been a cornerstone of Port Jervis, crafting dream kitchens and bathrooms with skill, care, and community pride. Founded in 1955, this family-owned business, led by second-generation plumber Tom Smith and his wife, Debbie Valentine, embodies their iconic slogan: “FINALLY A REMODELER WHO CAN DO IT ALL!” With a seamless, all-in-one approach, Smith delivers exceptional remodels and top-tier plumbing and HVAC services, earning trust across the Tri-State area.
A family legacy of craftsmanship
Smith began as a plumbing company under Tom’s father, evolving into a full-service remodeling firm by the 1960s. “Tom’s parents started just as a plumbing company,” Debbie shared. “Then he built this building… and created the showroom space… And then they decided to get their kitchen remodeled. And his dad said, ‘I could do this.’ So then he started to do kitchens… around 1965.”
Debbie, with her architecture degree, joined in the early 1990s, steering the company toward specializing in kitchens and bathrooms. “I was always interested in architecture,” she said. “We quickly learned that kitchens and bathrooms were the most rewarding… And it made sense, because we were already a plumbing company… It’s more interesting because we get involved in the fine details of interior design… the finishes, cabinets, tiles, flooring, textures, colors, which I find more interesting and challenging.”
Today’s trends reflect this evolution. “More open floor plans is the biggest change… everybody’s together,” Debbie noted. “We use more quartz than granite now… it’s durable, renewable, and easy to maintain. And vinyl plank flooring is waterproof and looks like wood — perfect for kitchens.”
A seamless, quality-driven process
Smith’s hallmark is handling every aspect of a remodel without subcontractors. “Our specialty is that we’ll handle the whole remodeling project,” Debbie explained. “We’ll do the fixtures, sinks, faucets, plumbing work, heating work, cabinets, flooring — everything. So when you hire us, you only have to hire us… we coordinate it all.” This eliminates delays, ensuring a smooth process. “You don’t have to get your electrician to come in at the right time and your plumber to come in at the right time… That doesn’t happen with us.”

The design process starts with a free estimate and home visit. “We come out to the home first and measure and talk to the people about what they might want, and give them suggestions,” Debbie said. “Then we’ll do two or three designs on the computer… three-dimensional colors that they can see.” Quality is key, with a focus on durable, repairable materials. “We want products that are good quality, that are repairable,” she emphasized. “The ones we sell from the plumbing supply warehouse are repairable… it’s just a part instead of throwing it away.”

Bringing joy to homeowners
Debbie’s passion shines when clients see their transformed spaces. “I really like when customers are pleasantly surprised,” she beamed. “A lot of people can’t imagine their kitchen or bathroom any other way than they’ve seen it for the last 25 years. But we’ll make suggestions, and they’ll say, ‘I would have never thought of that.’… It’s very fulfilling… We never leave somebody unhappy… We do what we promise.”
Her advice for first-time remodelers? Plan thoroughly. “Do a lot of careful planning. It pays off in the end… You can make as many changes as you want on paper, but once you start, it gets expensive,” she said. “We help people choose the best products for their budget, so they get the most out of it.”
A pillar of the Port Jervis community
Deeply rooted in Port Jervis, Smith supports the community through the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, volunteering for food drives, blood drives, and projects like a new special-needs park. “We’ve been here so long. Everybody knows us,” Debbie said. “Most of our business comes from referral… People know us.”
Smith also partners with local businesses like Neversink Lumber and Superior Glass. “We definitely work local… local glass people, tile suppliers, electricians,” Debbie said. “We keep them busy, support the local business, that’s important, help each other.” Looking ahead, Debbie envisions continuing this legacy. “We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing… working with our community businesses to keep the area going.”
