New Middletown, a boutique marketplace known for bringing international craftsmanship to downtown Middletown, NY, celebrated its two-year anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 15, with the grand opening of its new “Wellness Steep” tea section on the second floor. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., visitors sampled healthy herbal blends, explored the curated tea menu, and browsed the store’s ever-expanding collection of global products.

The event drew a steady flow of residents, longtime customers, and tea enthusiasts eager to experience New Middletown’s newest addition—one that reflects the store’s mission of combining elegance, culture, and community.

A tradition reborn on North Street

New Middletown sits inside the historic Tompkin’s Building, once the commercial center of Middletown from 1898 through 1984. Today, the revived space blends historic charm with modern international flair, offering everything from artisan teas and kitchenware to French skincare and Asian snacks.

For CEO Lily, the anniversary marks a meaningful milestone. “Considering this is a rundown downtown, I think we did pretty well,” she said. “We’re trying to revive the city. We changed our products according to the needs of the community, and we source internationally to bring in things you can’t even get in Manhattan.”

Lily regularly travels abroad—including sourcing trips to Frankfurt, Germany—to find unique items for the store.

“We look for products that are not only unique but also very reasonably priced,” she said. “A lot of what we carry, you simply can’t find anywhere else.”

Introducing ‘Wellness Steep’: Tea for health and rejuvenation

The focus of the celebration was the debut of the store’s new Wellness Steep tea concept—an herbal tea bar dedicated to health, balance, and natural nourishment.

“Wellness Steep means healthy drinks,” Lily explained. “In Chinese, it’s about rejuvenating your body. We source organic herbs, superfoods, and Chinese ingredients, and we brew or cook them in different ways.”

The store’s new blends target a range of wellness goals:

  • Weight control
  • Detox
  • Hair growth
  • Energy boosting
  • Eyesight support

And the team ensures taste is never sacrificed.

“We created a testing team to make sure everything tastes as good as it is healthy,” Lily said with a laugh. “Tea should be good for your body—but also delicious.”

Popular offerings included Blueberry Rose Infusion Tea and Berries & Chrysanthemum Tea, both crafted with antioxidant-rich ingredients.

Lily hopes customers will experience calm and beauty the moment they step into the second-floor tea room.

“We have a beautiful setting and a huge window looking out at downtown,” she said. “People sit down with their tea and they don’t want to leave.”

A store built on elegance, craftsmanship, and community

Shoppers often describe New Middletown as warm, elegant, and endlessly fun to explore. Lily believes what sets the store apart is its global focus.

“Our sourcing is completely different,” she said. “We’re known as an international market. We bring in German and Japanese cookware, French and Italian home goods, and teas from Taiwan. Everything is chosen for craftsmanship and purpose.”

But it’s not just products—New Middletown has become a hub for community gatherings, hosting concerts, tastings, and cultural events.

“Our whole goal is to help revive Middletown,” Lily said. “We’ve spent a lot of energy and resources because we want this to be a really nice community again, like it was many years ago.”

Visitors enjoy healthy teas and international finds

Guests at the anniversary event described New Middletown as a rare gem in the region.

Henny, a visitor encouraged by a friend, came specifically to see the new tea section.

“I was told there was an opening of a tea house with healthy drinks, so I came with two friends,” she said. “I tried Number 9—I don’t remember everything inside, but it was interesting!”

As an Asian American customer, she especially appreciates the variety of international skincare and beauty products.

“Asian and Western skin are different, so it’s nice to have Asian products available in town,” she said. “I’m kind of a regular here—they always have new things to explore.”

Bob, another visitor, sampled the Blueberry Rose Infusion Tea, known for its antioxidant and beauty benefits.

“I chose Number 6—but don’t ask me what’s in it,” he said, laughing. “There’s so much to choose from. I picked it because it was good for the skin.”

Bob is a loyal customer who regularly buys snacks and specialty foods from the store.

“The flavors here are exotic—you can try things you’ve never tried before,” he said. “I even bring some of the snacks to work. Nobody’s familiar with the salted egg flavor, so it’s fun to introduce people to new things.”

As an English pronunciation coach at a senior center, Bob said he enjoys sharing multicultural experiences with students as well.

“There are products here from Japan, Korea, Italy, Germany—it’s international,” he said. “That’s what makes New Middletown unique.”

Looking ahead

As New Middletown celebrates two years and opens its Wellness Steep tea section, Lily sees a bright future for both the store and the community.

“I’ve learned that people here are really nice,” she said. “Locals and visitors from surrounding towns all want to see Middletown revived. We just want to be part of that and do what we can to help.”
