According to reports from the New York Post and the Associated Press, police in Virginia confirmed on Thursday, April 16 that a former lieutenant governor of the state killed his wife and then himself at their residence in a suburb of Richmond. The tragic murder-suicide case quickly shocked the local community and the national political sphere.

At present, the medical examiner’s office and homicide unit are conducting an in-depth forensic investigation at the scene in an effort to determine the motive behind the tragedy.

According to an initial police statement, around 9 a.m. Thursday, authorities received a call from a neighbor reporting multiple gunshots inside the residence. Upon arrival, officers forced entry and found two bodies—one male and one female—in the master bedroom. The male deceased was identified as former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, and the female deceased was his 50-year-old wife. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene. Preliminary findings suggest that the former lieutenant governor shot his wife in the head before turning the gun on himself.

The Richmond Police Chief said in a subsequent press briefing: “This is a devastating domestic tragedy. There is currently no evidence of third-party involvement, and no signs of forced entry. We are working with the family to investigate whether there were long-standing domestic issues or mental health concerns.”

The former lieutenant governor had been active in Virginia politics for many years and was once regarded as a leading moderate voice, having advanced multiple pieces of legislation on public safety and education during his tenure. There were no unusual signs on his social media prior to the incident, and his last public appearance was at a charity fundraiser over the weekend. Neighbors told reporters that the couple appeared to have a stable relationship and were seen as a “model couple” in the community, expressing disbelief at the violent incident.

The current governor of Virginia and several bipartisan lawmakers have issued statements expressing deep condolences. The governor also urged the public to respect the privacy of the family and used the tragedy as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and domestic violence intervention. In response to the incident, the Virginia legislature has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Friday.

Authorities have seized the deceased’s electronic devices and documents, including a will. Further toxicology and autopsy results are expected next week. As the investigation continues, public attention is focused on why the former political rising star may have reached such an extreme end after leaving office.
