In honor of the US Navy and Marines 250th anniversary last week, Philly was flooded with celebratory events, with some spilling over into Camden, NJ. Preceding our Nation’s birthday by nearly a year, these defenders of freedom welcomed veterans and active duty members, as well the public at large, to join in a full week of commemorative activities.

The opening ceremony took place on Thursday, Oct 9, with a warm welcome for an impressive Parade of Ships. Music, blessings and narration as the ships passed the Historic Navy Yard could be observed from the adjacent Watch Party.

Free events included a memorial mass for Commodore Barry, fondly remembered as the “father of the American Navy.”

There was also a tour of Washington’s Crossing Boat — instrumental in George Washington’s surprise attack on the Hessians in Trenton, NJ; the name plate Dedication for the USS Enterprise — one of the Navy’s original carriers; the quintessential Philly, Rocky steps run at the Philadelphia Museum of art, and a multimedia exhibit, “We Stand the Watch,” taking participants through 250 years of Naval history.

Unfortunately a scheduled flyover was cancelled due to inclement weather, but nothing could stop the magnificent two-hour parade on Monday Oct 13.

Floats, marching bands, mounted officials and more marched from JFK Boulevard and 20th Street to Independence Mall, honoring the Navy and Marine Corps, as well as individuals on the path to military service.

Ticketed events included a football game between long-time rivals United States Naval Academy and Temple University at Lincoln Financial Field, a gala at the National Constitution Center, a ballet at the Academy of music, and two concerts – one by the Navy Band at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and another by the Philadelphia Orchestra, founded in 1900.

There were also ticketed tours, cruises, talks, conferences, a birthday breakfast, and a “Lunch and Learn” at The Tun — the rebuilt historic tavern recognized as the birthplace of the US Marine Corps. The original building was a vital gathering place for influential leaders, and where John Adams is said to have argued successfully for the making of a small American Navy in 1775.

The festivities culminated with live music on both sides of the river, and a spectacular display of fireworks over the Navy, Coast Guard, and historic ships on the Delaware.
