As the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, communities across all 50 states are hosting events aimed at commemorating the nation’s history, culture, and democratic traditions.

The nationwide effort is being coordinated in part through Freedom 250, a sprawling public-private initiative working alongside federal agencies and local organizations to promote events marking America’s semiquincentennial: The 250-year milestone since America’s founding on July 4, 1776.

The organization says celebrations are taking place nationwide, encouraging Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life to participate in local gatherings while also taking part in several large-scale national events.

Events across the nation

Among the largest events is the Great American State Fair, scheduled for June 25 through July 10 on Washington D.C.’s National Mall. Organizers describe it as a modern-day world’s fair featuring exhibits from states and U.S. territories, along with cultural performances, numerous food trucks, educational displays, innovation showcases, and family activities. Daily themes range from military appreciation and health initiatives to technology, education, business, and community life.

The fair is scheduled to officially open with a June 24 kickoff ceremony featuring military bands, musical performances, and remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump. More than 150 exhibits are expected to highlight the diversity of American culture, industry, and history.

A major Freedom 250 event will also take place July 1 in Medora, North Dakota, with the dedication of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. The ceremony will honor the legacy of President Theodore Roosevelt, whose years in the North Dakota Badlands helped shape his conservation philosophy and public service career.

The event will feature a ceremonial rail arrival, a mounted Rough Riders escort, and remarks from national and state leaders. Organizers say the celebration is intended to highlight Roosevelt’s contributions to conservation, public lands, national parks, and civic leadership while showcasing the landscape that influenced his life and presidency.

Another signature event is planned for July 3 at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The celebration will include military tributes, family activities, and a fireworks display beneath the monument honoring Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

July 4th celebrations

Independence Day festivities on July 4 will feature some of the most ambitious commemorations of the anniversary year. In New York Harbor, the International Naval Review, International Aerial Review, and Sail4th 250 will bring together U.S. and international naval vessels, military aircraft, and tall ships from more than 20 nations.

Meanwhile, Washington, D.C., will host “Salute to America,” a day-long celebration on the National Mall featuring patriotic performances, military demonstrations, tributes to service members, and a large-scale fireworks display. Organizers describe it as the centerpiece of the nation’s Independence Day observances.

Other events include the FIFA Fan Zone Experience in Washington, D.C., running through July 19, which coincides with the United States hosting matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and combines international sports with anniversary celebrations.

Together, the events reflect a broad national effort to commemorate 250 years of American independence while highlighting the people, places, and historical milestones that have shaped the country. Whether through local community gatherings or major national spectacles, organizers say the anniversary offers an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the nation’s past and look to its future.
