As cold and flu season intensifies, O’Connor Medical Urgent Care remains a vital healthcare resource for residents in and around Port Jervis, offering walk-in, same-day medical services with little or no wait.

“It’s an urgent care, so it’s no appointment necessary—a walk-in medical clinic,” said Brandon O’Connor, MD, medical director and attending physician at the practice. “We see anything from acute illnesses like cold, strep, flu, COVID. We do stitches, X-rays, injuries, workers’ compensation, and no-fault insurance as well.”

Dr. O’Connor, a board-certified family medicine physician with more than 13 years of urgent care experience, explained that the clinic was created to address a common gap in local healthcare access. “A lot of times your primary care doctor can’t get you in the same day because they have a full schedule,” he said. “That’s exactly why we’re here—to make sure patients get seen when they need to.”

Seasonal demand and comprehensive services

According to Dr. O’Connor, respiratory-related visits increase significantly during the winter months. “Certainly this time of the year, most popular services are a lot of respiratory testing,” he said. “We can do respiratory panels in the office—rapid COVID, flu, and RSV testing.”

He noted that COVID cases are still present, though patterns have changed. “It seems to be more seasonal,” he said. “The last couple of weeks, we’ve had more flu and some COVID. It kind of dies down and then comes back.”

In addition to urgent illness and injury care, the clinic provides on-site X-rays, urinary tract infection testing, STD testing, immunizations, physical exams, and preventive screenings. O’Connor Medical Urgent Care also specializes in occupational health, offering DOT physicals, workplace injury care, and safety-related screenings for local employers.

Accessibility and patient-centered care

Accessibility is a cornerstone of the clinic’s mission. “People can just walk in. They don’t need appointments,” Dr. O’Connor said. “We accept most major insurances, and we also have reasonable self-pay rates for people who don’t have insurance or have high deductibles.”

Patients frequently cite short wait times and attentive service in online reviews. “I checked in at the desk and I was called in to a patient room within about five minutes,” wrote Pamela L., a recent patient. “Everyone was very nice there. I highly recommend them.”

Another patient, Liberty B., shared, “I will drive 45 minutes from Dingmans Ferry, PA because of the quality of care I always receive.”

Commitment to quality and safety

Ensuring high-quality care is a continuous process, Dr. O’Connor emphasized. “We’re constantly reviewing charts and keeping up with current medical education to make sure we’re providing the most appropriate care for patients,” he said.

Samanda, the clinic’s office manager, added that O’Connor Medical Urgent Care is accredited by the Urgent Care Association of America. “They come in and make sure all of our policies, hygiene practices, and infection control measures meet proper standards,” she said. “It ensures we’re following those golden standards.”

Samanda, who has been with the clinic since it opened, said patient and staff well-being are central to her role. “I started as a medical assistant and worked my way into management,” she said. “I’m here most of the time making sure the staff are taken care of and patients are taken care of.”

Community involvement

Beyond clinical care, O’Connor Medical Urgent Care actively supports the local community. “We sponsor a lot of local organizations—Little League teams, high schools, cheerleading teams, and the local radio station,” Dr. O’Connor said.

The clinic also participates in community events such as the Port Jervis Derby and National Night Out, and hosts an annual trunk-or-treat event in the fall, welcoming families for a safe, festive gathering.

Health advice and holiday wishes

As respiratory illnesses circulate, Dr. O’Connor offered simple advice to residents. “Wash your hands frequently, avoid sick people, cover your cough—those typical things,” he said. “There are a lot of respiratory illnesses right now, so protecting yourself that way is best.”

Looking ahead to the holidays, he added, “We wish everyone happy holidays, a healthy New Year, and happiness, joy, and prosperity for everybody.”
