A livestream of Henan’s Spring Festival Gala was abruptly interrupted halfway through its Feb. 14 broadcast, triggering a wave of online chatter that quickly escalated into what netizens dubbed the “2/14 broadcast cut-off incident.” The yearly program is considered a popular tradition for families to partake in during Lunar New Year celebrations across China.

As clips and reactions spread across Chinese social media, many viewers questioned why the program was suddenly replaced with extended advertisements and why parts of the show appeared to vanish without explanation.

Some online commenters speculated that the interruption may have been linked to the gala’s emphasis on traditional Chinese cultural themes, while others suggested the broadcast was cut because performers appeared in traditional Hanfu attire that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) does not wish to promote.

The unexpected disruption left many asking a pointed question: Why was the livestream stopped so abruptly, and what, exactly, was being censored?

A technical glitch or a deliberate choice?

On Feb. 15, a Douyin creator using the name “拾芳居” posted a video alleging that the Henan gala had been affected behind the scenes. “Henan’s Spring Festival Gala still got taken down,” the blogger said. “The staff were ready backstage, but the program couldn’t go on. It was replaced with wall-to-wall ads, and even the host was removed.”

In the same video, a woman who claimed to have been working at the front of the stage offered a carefully worded statement: “As someone on the front lines, there are many things I can’t say. I can only hint at them. But I hope everyone can open their eyes, work hard to discern certain things, and stay united… For our generation, cultural revival is our responsibility.”

Her remarks fueled further speculation that the interruption was not a technical accident, but a deliberate decision.

Erasing cultural programming

Another Douyin blogger, “李勇LY,” described the disrupted broadcast as an “advertising night,” lamenting what he saw as the replacement of cultural expression with commercial noise. Douyin is a popular blogging and social media app in China.

“What I saw was not awkwardness, but backbone. This Lunar New Year’s Eve, Henan TV did not dance,” said the blogger, adding, “The flowing Han garments that should have graced the stage were cut into advertising fragments. The ceremonial bells and elegant music that should have sounded were replaced with commercial clamor.”

He claimed that Henan’s production team had prepared multiple programs centered on Chinese heritage and cultural renaissance, but that the livestream ended abruptly: “The broadcast suddenly disappeared halfway through, and all kinds of ads flooded the screen. The more they try to cover something up, the more it proves that what we suspected was right.”

Other creators echoed similar frustration. A blogger known as “星河” said: “Did you understand this year’s Henan gala? The program was torn apart. The Douyin livestream was cut off because of Hanfu. ‘Wen Yue’ was canceled, and more and more programs were abruptly pulled, leaving only extra-long ads to fill the gaps.” Another user, “杨萱萱123,” wrote: “More than eight million viewers were suddenly disconnected. Henan TV did its best. It was all about cultural revival.”

Henan residents also voiced disappointment online: “This year’s Henan gala let everyone down, it was heavily restricted. The fact that it aired at all is already something.”

Netizens react

On X, some users claimed the broadcast was cut because “Hanfu was reported,” while others circulated more politically charged theories, including comparisons to U.S.-based Shen Yun Performing Arts. The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding cultural expression in China, where performances emphasizing traditional identity can sometimes become entangled in political scrutiny.

While no official explanation has been provided for the livestream interruption, the public reaction reflects a deeper tension: The growing popularity of cultural revival movements, including Hanfu, classical aesthetics, historical storytelling, alongside the state’s strict control over what narratives are permitted on major platforms. As one commenter wrote: “The more they won’t let it air, the more people want to watch.”

Whether the disruption was caused by censorship, technical issues, or internal decisions, the sudden cut-off has left a lingering question across Chinese social media: What, exactly, is the regime afraid of when it comes to traditional culture?
