According to Fox News on May 19, U.S. President Donald Trump secured another key political victory in Kentucky’s Republican primary. Former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, personally endorsed by Trump, defeated incumbent Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who had long been at odds with Trump.
The closely watched primary was widely seen as another sign of Trump strengthening his leadership over the Republican Party and once again demonstrating his strong influence among grassroots MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) voters.
Trump endorsement helps MAGA camp score another win
Trump publicly supported Gallrein multiple times in the final stretch of the race while sharply criticizing Massie for repeatedly obstructing Republican priorities.
Trump said Massie was “one of the worst congressmen in the history of our great party,” criticizing him for opposing major Republican priorities and, at times, aligning with Democrats on key issues.
Gallrein ultimately won the primary by nearly a 10-point margin, a result widely viewed as another demonstration of Trump’s continued political influence.

In his victory speech, Gallrein specifically thanked Trump for his support and emphasized: “My focus is on advancing the President’s and the Republican Party’s agenda — putting America first and Kentucky always.”
Gallrein previously served in the U.S. Navy SEALs and centered his campaign on his military background, conservative values, and strong support for Trump’s political direction.

Massie’s independent streak costs him grassroots support
Thomas Massie, who entered Congress in 2012, built a reputation as a libertarian-minded Republican who frequently diverged from mainstream Republican positions on major issues.
He opposed Trump-backed tax and spending legislation, consistently opposed U.S. foreign military aid — including assistance to Israel and Ukraine — and recently criticized strong U.S. military actions toward Iran.
According to The Associated Press, many Republican voters increasingly became frustrated with Massie’s repeated opposition to party efforts, believing that although he promoted “America First” ideals, he weakened Republican unity and effectiveness.
Gallrein repeatedly highlighted that argument during the campaign, stating that Massie was effectively opposing both Trump and Republican priorities.
In the campaign’s final phase, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also traveled to Kentucky to campaign for Gallrein, underscoring how important Trump allies considered the race.
Republicans move deeper into the ‘Trump era’
The Kentucky primary is not an isolated event.
Recently, several Republican politicians who publicly opposed Trump or distanced themselves from him have suffered defeats in primary contests.
Several Indiana state lawmakers who blocked Republican redistricting efforts were defeated by Trump-backed candidates. Meanwhile, in Louisiana, Senator Bill Cassidy — who supported Trump’s impeachment in 2021 — also failed to advance.
Political analysts say these developments reflect a Republican grassroots base increasingly aligned with the MAGA movement, with Trump remaining the party’s most influential figure.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung wrote on social media: “Do not ever doubt President Trump and his political power. F*** around, find out.”
McConnell era nears end as GOP shifts further toward ‘America First’
Kentucky Republicans also held another major Senate primary the same day.
Congressman Andy Barr, who received Trump’s endorsement, defeated former state Attorney General Daniel Cameron and is now positioned to potentially succeed retiring Republican veteran leader Mitch McConnell.
Relations between McConnell and Trump have remained strained in recent years, particularly after the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol events, when tensions between the two became increasingly public.
As the McConnell era gradually comes to a close, the Republican Party is increasingly shifting away from traditional establishment politics toward a direction more strongly centered on MAGA principles and “America First” priorities.
The Kentucky primary results once again suggest that Trump continues to maintain strong support among Republican grassroots voters while actively reshaping the party’s future direction.
