Mending Broken Hearts: Bereaved Parents 5 Years After Sichuan Earthquake

When an magnitude-8 quake struck Sichuan Province in 2008, around 70,000 people were killed with nearly another 20,000 recorded as missing.

Thousands of children were lost during the disaster in a country where most families are only allowed one child. This video looks at the story of two families recovering from their loss; one elderly couple hopes to adopt, while the other are still young enough to try for another child.

Born in Beichuan, director Zijian Mu lost close relatives during the quake, and his father taught for years at the middle school, where over 1,500 students perished. This video is a shorter version of his film One Child.
