A 73-year-old man graduated from Jiaxing University in Zhejiang Province earlier this month, over half a century since he first tried to study a degree.
He got another chance in 1977, when college entrance examinations restarted, but by then Zou was too old to apply. However, four years later, the age restrictions were lifted, and Zou began doing the hard yards to get into uni.
He spent two years studying hard to pass the entrance exam, but then missed out because he didn’t understand how to apply afterward.
Undeterred, he went to a technical college for three years, and kept redoing the university entrance exam each year.
Eventually he was able to enroll at Jiaxing University in 2012, becoming the institution’s oldest-ever student, and probably one of its most diligent ones.
Zou is easy to recognize among the younger students, and quite a popular character with endearing nicknames. The youngsters like to listen to all his tales about how he managed to get to university.
A group of his classmates gave him a photo album at their graduation party so he could remember the six years he spent studying in Jiaxing.
Zou now wants to take a postgraduate degree, and plans to keep trying even though he failed the first exam.
